Until the 1940s, Rödlöga was a living island all year around with a permanent population that lived by fishing, seal hunting and growing potatoes. There are signs showing that there were settlements in Rödlöga already in the 1500s. When the Russians burned down large parts of the archipelago in the early 1700s Rödlöga was one of the few islands that survived. Today there are about 150 households on the island.
